In recent years, incidents of personal data breaches involving customers or employees have become increasingly common with an upward trend. According to an investigation by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) in Hong Kong, there are around 100 personal data breach cases each year received.

However, last year, this number surged by more than double to 217 cases. The PCPD held a press conference last month (21 August) to announce two investigation reports on employee data breaches involving a well-known international fashion brand and a jewelry company. Both companies were found guilty for the contravention of The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (the "PDPO")  - Data Protection Principles (DPPs) (4)(1) concerning the security and protection of personal data.
